    Tentmates

Post by tuck on 01/06/12, 04:44 pm

Kallista yawned as she returned to the clearing where the party had set up camp after attending to her nightly sleep preparation routines. The sun had already set, and the small campfire glowed a deep red as her various teammates mingled and flitted around the area. The night was cool, but dry, and the breeze made her glad that she was sharing a tent. The extra body heat would be welcome.

She made her way to the tent and opened the flap, leaning down to climb in. Agyness had already set up a small lantern and was getting her own bedroll ready when Kallista entered.

She smiled as the Vryloka looked up at her.

"Hey there", the tiefling said, "Almost ready to turn in? I apologize in advance if I snore. If I do, just kick me or something."

Agyness smiled at her companion, amused.

"I spent years with the Palatine guards; I can sleep through pretty much anything. Thanks for the consideration, though."

She straightened out her bedroll, turning to rummage through her backpack.

"By the same token, I hope you don't mind the light. I like to read before bed."

She pulled a slightly battered book from her pack and began settling onto her bedroll.

"Not at all!" Kallisa said, unlatching her bed roll, "I'll be up for a bit anyway. I'm not much of a book person, but it always takes me a while to fall asleep when we're out on an adventure. I always get all excited. Whatcha reading?"

Agyness blushed, faint patches of color showing on her pale cheeks.

"'Journey Through the Forest of Dreams.' Its, ah, its from the 'Marked Brothers' series. Been reading them for years."

Kallista plopped herself down on her bedroll opposite her teammate.

"Oh?" she said, "Never heard of it. What's it about?"

"Its about a bunch of dragonmarked adventurers who are ludicrously good-looking and talented, wandering around saving folks, fighting monsters, and ultimately falling in love. You know, typical stuff."

She shrugged, somewhat awkwardly now that she was leaned back against her pack.

    "Its entertaining, at least."

    Kallista laughed.

"Oh, is's one of *those* novels, huh?" she said with a grin, "Yeah, after the arena fight The Thunderbolts even got our own series. But hey, you're an adventurer yourself. You do all that stuff in real life. Why read about it in your downtime too?"

"Well, there's a reason I do this in real life. I've been reading these since I was a kid. Much to my parents' dismay."

    Agyness looked pensive.

"I mean, I was a soldier, and I've read "Scales of War" and "The Winter Campaign" a dozen times each, I'd bet. Sometimes fun is also useful."

Kallista's grin softened into an understanding smile.

"I can see how that might be true. It is exciting, isn't it? What we do? Saving people, fighting the good fight. I'd never even heard of adventurers before I came to Highmark, but I can't imagine ever doing anything else."

She peered at the cover of the book that Agyness held in her lap.

"So you always wanted to be an adventurer?"

"Oh, uh, I...well, I've trained as a soldier, a fighter, since I was little. I had a talent, and my parents were happy to oblige. Well, my mother never really understood my interest, but she was plenty indulgent. She thought it was something I'd grow out of. My father, he...he doesn't talk a lot about his past, but I think he was a warrior himself when he was younger. When he was living."

"Oh, I'm sorry" she said, "I didn't know he was deceased."

    Agyness chuckled.

"Its okay, he died at least a thousand years ago."

    She smiled.

"My father is a vampire, Kallista."

Kallista sat back slightly and cocked her head.

"Oh" she said, "I ummm... huh."

"You um... you might not want to mention that to Tzesira when she gets back. She has this... thing... about vampires."

"Yeah, uh, Monti mentioned that. I'm given to understand she's pretty...intense."

    Agyness frowned.

"Its not a problem, is it? I know most people outside Thantopolis aren't exactly used to dealing with the undead."

Kallista voice took on a note of concern.

"Oh! No! Not at all! Really, she's a great person when you get to know her. She's just kind of... weird... about some things. And I doubt anyone else on the team would have any problems with it. I certainly don't. I mean I know better than anyone that no one can help their parents."

She smiled warmly and then suddenly frowned.

"Oh! Not that I think you're father is a bad person! Err... vampire... thing... I'm sure he's wonderful for an undead!"

    "... I'm not helping am I?"

Aygness responded to Kallista verbal stumbling with a bemused look.

"I'd have thought, as an adventurer who lives in Highmark, you'd have a little more experience with things other people might consider...out of the ordinary."

    The vryloka smiled indulgently.

"Its okay. I understand that my heritage is strange outside of my home."

    Her face grew more serious.

"My father's kind is killed in six of the eight cities unless they're literally licensed to exist. My kind was exiled for centuries, which was practically a death sentence too."

    She grimaced.

"Sorry. That was a little heavy, and I barely know you. Its...kind of a sore subject."

"Hey, no..." Kallista said, reaching out to put her hand over Agyness' in comfort, "*I'm* sorry. I didn't mean to insult you or anything. I mean, I can see how you'd be... resentful."

    She sighed.

"I know what it's like to have people mistrust you and hate you because of what you are. Or rather, what they think you are. And if Tzesira gives you any trouble at all, tell me. Okay? I'll start crying until she feels like shit about it."

Agyness smiled at the tiefling, bemused.

"You're sweet, but I promise, I can take care of myself. That's what the giant shield is for, you know."

"So, you said you can't imagine doing anything else. It seems adventuring agrees with you, huh?"

"Gods, I don't think I could really do anything else. This life is so exciting! Every day is something new and interesting."

"What do you think? Do you like it better or worse than being a soldier?"

    Agyness paused, thinking.

"I'm not sure, really. They're actually pretty different, when it comes down to it. As an adventurer, you work when you want, get paid a fortune, and you go a lot of different places. As a soldier, you always have someone telling you what to do and when, the pay is terrible, and you have no say in where you're going."

    She sighed.

"But, when you're a soldier, you get to see the good you're doing. I spent two years north of Grimfar, mostly up in the mountains, defending little hamlets from insane cultists and lycanthrope tribes and about as much undead as I grew up with. Its not glamorous, but it keeps those towns from being raided, those fields unburnt, and, ultimately, the cities fed. You don't just see the people you rescue, you see their families, their homes, their lives."

The vryloka smirked, somewhat abashed at her small speech.

"I guess there's a reason they classify me as a 'defender.'"

Kallista smiled. She liked Agyness. They seemed to share a general need to protect and help others, although they went about it in very different ways.

"Well, we do a lot of good here, too. Sometimes it just isn't as readily obvious. I try to make sure we take the jobs that are helping people. We've done a lot of village protection quests, and just recently we helped Beryl clear out some ogres and pirates that were threatening a trade route. And we did a lot of good after the Highmark Disaster. I like to think we make a difference."

    She smirked.

"Although I guess our methods are a bit... heavy handed sometimes. We kind of have a 'Best defense is a good offense' mentality. Me and Tzesira especially."

"Sorry, I'm not meaning to imply that adventurers don't help people. They, we, do, a lot. I'm just saying...its point defense versus sustained security. Complementary, you know?"

    Agyness smirked back.

"Yeah, I'm familiar with the concept. My training just...goes in a different direction. Besides, our methods seems to work well together."

"Most of the time" Kallista said with a wink, "We do get our asses handed to us on occasion. But don't tell the book publishers that."

"I know you didn't mean to imply anything. I just want you to know that we're not like some of the parties, especially over in the Guild, that are only in it for the money. I kinda view us as specialists. When things get too hairy for the local authorities, or just when they need more unique skillsets, that's when they send for us. I mean, sure we get paid a lot, but magic weapons and armor aren't free. And Most of us try to give back to the community. Roscoe, Delona and I actually run an orphanage for victims of the Highmark Disaster. Most of us do charity work and donate to the various churches, too. It's a good team to be on. And I'm glad we got you to be a part of it. With Dheni gone, we need a strong defender to watch our backs. And our fronts. Often our sides, too."
