    Rose

Post by tuck on 24/06/11, 10:37 am

It was another life, another world. Whatever Rose had been before, whoever she had been, it was gone now.

Her first life was boring and predictable. A childhood in poverty. Teenage years on the streets. A life of heroin scars and cold nights and vodka soaked mornings. It ended early, but not surprisingly, late at night in a small, dirty apartment with nicotine stained curtains and milk-crate furniture. Another statistic lost in the deep, dark city.

She knew all this from newspaper clippings. For a short while she had become interested in the person she was before. She found her old name in a few arrest reports, a listing of residents of local homeless shelters, a short, generic obituary with several typos. She could guess the rest.

Since then she tried not to think about that life.

Her new life began like the old one ended; in a small, cramped apartment. When she woke she was naked, wet, wracked with pain. She lay on a cold steel table, the only light was a industrial lamp that shined like a beacon onto her. The walls were lined with shelves of books and chemicals and devices that she never had the chance to come to understand.

Then he was there. Her creator. Her Savior.

He held her close and covered her in a blanket and whispered to her, and although she does not remember what he said, she felt safe... she felt comforted. In a while the pain stopped and she drifted to sleep; not the sleep of death, but the sleep of life.

When she woke, he was gone.

She waited days for him to return. To tell her where she was, who she was, what her purpose was in this life.

She found clothes in her size and a little food in the small cabinet. She flipped idly through some of the books, but found only arcane scripts and runic symbols she couldn't understand.

For over a week she waited.

Finally, she resigned herself to the fact that he wouldn't be returning. Mustering her courage she took what little money she found in the apartment and left.

At first she got by on instincts left over from her old life. She wandered streets and stayed in bus stations and homeless shelters. She became a prostitute partly out of need and partly out of curiosity. It allowed her to see people's darkest secrets and deepest wants. She took the name "Rose" without really understanding why, but later came to see it as symbol of her quest for the life and the meaning she couldn't seem to find.

In music and art she found other methods of seeking the spark of humanity that she wanted so badly to reclaim, although the deeper meanings and emotions always eluded her, and her work was proficient, but hollow.

Her needs were few, and her income sufficient to allow her to rent small rooms in whatever town she drifted to. As she traveled, seeking her humanity and her purpose in the faces of strangers and the streets of labyrinthine cities, she watched and she listened. She studied the people that she met, and sometimes they took this as a sign of friendship. Other times they could tell that something was not right with her, and these times often ended awkwardly.

With nothing better to do and no higher purpose, Rose has traveled for two years, now finding herself in the crumbling metropolis of Detroit. She still searches for the man who made her among the throngs, but every day she finds less and less hope that she will someday be able to find him and her reason for existing.
